NHTSA ads take aim at South Carolina teen drinking and driving

A new series of ads produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council takes aim at underage drinking and driving as "the ultimate party foul." The ads, which were rolled out for National Teen Driver Safety Awareness Week, are targeted directly to teens in South Carolina and elsewhere, employing a touch of humor to convey the serious underlying message. The interactive multimedia ads were designed by Merkley+Partners, and an associated app was developed by Swyft Media.

The dangers of combustible dust

Combustible dust is a common hazard in some South Carolina workplaces, and combustible material burns quickly when divided finely. Even materials that do not usually burn can become explosive if the conditions are right, and OSHA says that these explosions can kill workers and destroy entire facilities. According to data from the federal safety agency, 281 workplace accidents between 1980 and 2005 involved combustible dust. These accidents claimed the lives of 119 workers and left 718 others injured.

Car accidents still a main cause of death

South Carolina ranks ninth among states where people are most likely to die in a motor vehicle accident, with a fatality rate of 16.5 per 100,000 people. However, overall deaths from car accidents are down by one-third over the past three years and have shown a steady decline since the mid 1980s. Experts say this is due to better structural design, better safety features and the use of seat belts.

Accident avoidance strategies for motorcyclists

Accidents on South Carolina roads can be serious for all motorists, but those on motorcycles face particularly high risks due to the lack of any protective enclosure as they travel. An additional area of vulnerability stems from the fact that a motorcycle can be difficult for other motorists to see. There are many common accident scenarios for motorcyclists, and experts agree that safety education is an important key to minimizing one's risks while riding. Additionally, appropriate gear may help in mitigating some visibility issues while facilitating more comfortable and safe motorcycle riding.

New data on fatal workplace injuries in 2014

Fatal workplace accidents in South Carolina often involve fatal slips, trips and falls. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data that was recently released, the number of fatal workplace slips, trips and falls rose by 10 percent from 2013 to 2014. The significant increase in these types of fatal workplace accidents was largely due to the high number of falls to a lower level in the latter year.
