Driver charged with DUI after 4-car crash

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported a four-car accident July 26 that occurred on a bridge near Highway 17 at approximately 2:30 p.m. The crash took place between Georgetown and Pawleys Island. It appeared that the driver who may have caused the accident was intoxicated.

Law enforcement stated that the driver of a Camry collided with the vehicle in front of him as he was traveling on Highway 17. He then struck a vehicle that was driving next to him. This vehicle, a white pickup truck, struck the highway median, causing it to overturn. An SUV that was heading in the opposite direction struck the overturned pickup truck.

The accused driver was identified as a 67-year-old Pawleys Island man. He was taken into custody before being charged with DUI. It appeared that there were no serious injuries from the accident. Those who were involved in the crash were checked out by emergency medical personnel. It was not stated if anyone was sent to the hospital. The crash did cause Highway 17 to be shut down for a short time, causing a major backup in traffic.

Even minor car accidents can result in serious injuries that could impact a person’s life or even be life-threatening. In these cases, the injured person could potentially seek compensation for the injuries if it can be proven that another driver was responsible for causing the crash. A personal injury attorney may assist with filing the claim and working the insurance company to cover the cost of the damages. If the insurance company refuses to pay, the attorney may help the injured person take the case to court.
