Distracting dashboards are unsafe

Drivers in South Carolina are often aware of the dangers of distracted driving. Typically, drivers associate driving distractions with using a cellphone, texting or even talking to a passenger. Unfortunately, it is easy to overlook some of the more pernicious distractions because they've actually been built into the car's dashboard.

Automobile manufacturers take pride in offering state-of-the-art amenities in their vehicles. These include dashboards that contain touchscreens, text capabilities and navigation. While these technologies can be handy, they can also interfere with safe driving.

A recent study by AAA showed that the use of these features could create moderate to high levels of distraction in drivers depending on the car model. In some cases, drivers were distracted for as long as 40 seconds while performing tasks such as texting or even using the GPS of a 2017 model vehicle. This presents serious safety issues that could lead to car accidents.

Unfortunately, even a responsible driver can quickly succumb to distraction and miss lane changes or not be as aware of cars, cyclists and pedestrians. Individuals who have been involved in auto accidents may suffer a variety of serious injuries, including brain injury or permanent disability. The damage suffered could lead to lifelong consequences, such as chronic pain or the inability to work.

Individuals who have been injured in an automobile accident caused by distracted driving may wish to speak with an experienced attorney. The lawyer may be able to review the client's case and make recommendations regarding strategies for receiving compensation. These may include negotiating with insurance companies, seeking a monetary settlement or even pursuing litigation to pay for medical bills and lost wages.
