Automatic braking technology could reduce crashes

Rear-end auto accidents in South Carolina can occur for a number of reasons, including mechanical failure, distracted driving or a failure to apply enough pressure when braking. However, automatic braking features could reduce this type of accident significantly. Many of the nation’s major automobile manufacturers are expected to agree to incorporate this auto-braking technology into their vehicles for the United States by 2022.

The agreement in question will represent nearly all light vehicles sold in the U.S. A representative of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the agreement will enable this technology to move forward more quickly than with a rule that is legally binding. A former administrator for NHTSA, however, suggests that the deal may not be as beneficial as a legally binding rule as there would be no penalties or legal avenues for enforcing an agreement.

Statistics indicate that more than 1,700 individuals perished in rear-end car accidents in 2012 in the U.S., and at least 547,000 people were injured. Experts believe that nearly 90 percent of injuries and deaths in rear-end crashes could be avoided or mitigated with the use of automated braking systems.

Although this type of preventive technology could improve safety on the nation’s roads, it is important for drivers to be proactive in navigating their vehicles in a safe manner. Issues such as distracted driving can increase the severity of accidents because a distracted motorist may not correct the speed soon enough to minimize the impact. An accident that results from driver distraction could have a major impact on the life of an injured party. Cases of distracted driving might be addressed through legal action, allowing an injured party to seek compensation for damages that are not adequately addressed through the at-fault motorist’s insurance policy.
