Driver in custody following deadly crash

A 24-year-old South Carolina man was taken into custody following a suspected DUI crash that killed a 33-year-old bicyclist on July 12. The cyclist was in the 3400 block of U.S. 17 South when the driver struck him from behind. The cyclist died at the scene before he could be taken to the hospital, and a coroner found that the cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries.

The driver continued driving for a few blocks after the accident, but he then walked back to the site and talked to police. Police allegedly determined he was intoxicated, and he was taken into custody. He has been charged with felony DUI that caused the death of another person.

He remained in custody on Sunday, July 13, on $25,000 bond. The man was given a blood test as well, but the results of the blood test have not been made public.

When an intoxicated driver kills a person through negligence, the death can be extremely emotionally and financially difficult for relatives of the victim to process. In many fatal car accidents, the monetary cost of the death can become exorbitant.
