Accidents involving large trucks often result in serious, and sometimes fatal, injuries. This is often due to the fact that trucks are larger and heavier than other motor vehicles.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 65% of those who die in a large truck accident are occupants of cars and other motor vehicles. The majority of these crashes occur on major roads that are not freeways or interstates. The majority of accidents occur between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM.

One of the factors in many accidents is brake malfunction. It takes longer for heavy trucks to stop, and inclement weather conditions and unmaintained brakes lengthen that time. Fatigue is another factor, as truckers often drive for many hours in a row.

According to the Federal Carrier Safety Administration, the long stopping distances also contribute to motor vehicle operator errors. If drivers understand this fact, they can leave more space in between them and large trucks, especially if the roads are wet.

Drivers should be aware of the large blind spots of trucks so they can stay out of them. There are large blind spots on the sides, front and rear of the truck. Staying back also prevents disaster in the event a truck rolls back on a hill.

Trucks need more room to turn. They turn wide and may also start a turn from the middle lane. Other drivers should stay out of their way and give them plenty of room.

Both truck and other drivers can prevent more accidents by following general safety tips. These include driving sober, staying focused, not driving while tired and obeying the rules of the road.
